With rapid development and wide expansion of information technology (IT)
on a global basis, the variety and complexity of information that
we receive daily are about to expand further.
To live in such a highly developed information society,
IT systems should become more flexible, effective,
and most importantly, intelligent.
A promising direction to realize such an intelligent system is
to learn from humans, who sense a variety of external stimuli
via sensory organs and can generate prompt and flexible reactions
to stimuli through complicated information processing in the brain.
To achieve a next-generation computer system, we investigate biological systems as an ideal information processing system to maximize IT systems'
computational capabilities.
